Adaptive Power, Optimized Battery Charging, and Low Power Mode all live inside Settings on an iPhone, and they solve three different problems, the same three problems covered piece by piece in our iPhone battery health guide. Low Power Mode: an immediate, manual runtime saver

Low Power Mode is the oldest of the three and the one most people already know. Apple's own description: "Low Power Mode reduces background activity on iPhones and iPads to extend battery life." Turning it on cuts a specific list of things: 5G turns off on most devices, Auto-Lock defaults to 30 seconds, display brightness drops, the display refresh rate caps at 60Hz on ProMotion models, some visual effects turn off, iCloud Photos pauses, automatic downloads stop, and both email fetch and background app refresh turn off.

You turn it on yourself: Settings, Battery, Power Mode, then toggle Low Power Mode. iPhone will also offer to turn it on automatically once the battery hits 20%, and it turns itself back off once you charge past 80%, so it is not something you have to remember to switch off after an overnight charge.

Optimized Battery Charging: slows down aging, not draining

Optimized Battery Charging is not about getting through today. It is about the battery still holding a useful capacity in two or three years. Apple's explanation is direct: "When the feature is enabled, your iPhone will delay charging past 80 percent in certain situations." A full charge held at 100% for hours, which is exactly what happens overnight on a nightstand charger, is one of the harder things you can do to a lithium-ion cell, and this feature is built to avoid it without you having to do anything.

It works by learning, not guessing from day one. Apple's own machine learning model needs roughly two weeks and at least nine charging sessions of five-plus hours in the same location before it starts predicting your routine. Once it has that pattern, it holds the charge near 80% and finishes the last stretch right before your usual wake-up or unplug time, based on your charging history, your daily routine, and even location data if you allow it. You'll see a lock screen notification telling you when it will finish, with a "Charge Now" option if you need a full battery sooner than predicted. One condition worth knowing: Optimized Battery Charging only works when Charge Limit is set to 100%. Adaptive Power: the newest layer, and the one that can turn the others on for you

Adaptive Power is the newest of the three, introduced in iOS 26. Where Low Power Mode is something you switch on and Optimized Battery Charging works quietly in the background on the charging side, Adaptive Power is a prediction engine. Apple's description: it "can predict when you'll need extra battery and then make performance adjustments to help your battery last longer" on days it detects you're using more power than usual. It can go further than a simple prediction too: "When active, Adaptive Power can even turn on Low Power Mode to extend battery life automatically when your battery reaches 20 percent," rather than waiting for you to accept the usual prompt.

It is not on everywhere. It ships on by default on iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air. On iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 16e, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max, it exists but ships off, so you have to turn it on yourself. Do they get in each other's way?

No, because they operate on different mechanisms. Optimized Battery Charging only touches how the battery charges, never how it discharges once you unplug, so it has nothing to conflict with when Low Power Mode or Adaptive Power change what the phone does while running on battery. Low Power Mode and Adaptive Power do overlap on paper, since Adaptive Power's whole job on a heavy-use day is to trigger Low Power Mode for you, but that is the intended relationship, not two features fighting for the same setting. In practice a phone can have all three doing their job at once: Optimized Battery Charging holding the overnight charge near 80% until the last useful moment, Adaptive Power watching how the day is going, and Low Power Mode kicking in, either because you asked or because Adaptive Power predicted you'd need it, once the battery gets low.

The only real trade-off is Charge Limit. Setting Charge Limit below 100% (available on iPhone 15 and later, in 5% steps from 80-100%) switches off Optimized Battery Charging's own prediction logic, since that logic only runs when the limit is left at 100%. If you already run a fixed cap like 80%, Optimized Battery Charging simply has nothing to do, and that's expected, not a bug.

FAQ

Do I need to turn all three on?

No. Optimized Battery Charging is on by default and works passively; leave it alone unless you've deliberately set a lower Charge Limit. Low Power Mode is worth turning on any day you know you'll be away from a charger. Adaptive Power is worth checking if your iPhone is one of the models that ships with it off, since it's a free layer of protection with no real downside.

Does Adaptive Power replace Low Power Mode?

No, it can trigger it. Adaptive Power is a prediction layer sitting above Low Power Mode; when it decides you're having a heavy-use day, one of the things it can do is turn Low Power Mode on for you at 20% battery, the same threshold where iPhone would otherwise just prompt you to do it manually.

Will Optimized Battery Charging mean my phone is always stuck at 80%?

No. It delays the last 20% based on your predicted routine and finishes charging to 100% before you actually need it, using your usual unplug time as the target. If your routine changes and you need a full charge sooner, tapping "Charge Now" on the lock screen notification overrides it immediately.

Which iPhones can use Adaptive Power?

iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air ship with it on by default. iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 16e, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max support it too, but it ships off, so you turn it on yourself under Settings, Battery, Power Mode. Can I use Low Power Mode and Optimized Battery Charging at the same time?

Does any of this apply to Android phones?
