Your battery health meter is not lying, but it is not measuring either. It is estimating. The percentage in your settings is a software calculation built on readings from the battery management system (BMS), and estimates drift, jump after updates, and disagree between apps. That is why your iPhone can say 87% while a desktop tool says 84%, and why neither number is proof of anything on its own.

What the number actually is

Every phone battery has a small chip, the battery management system, that tracks voltage, current, temperature and charge cycles. Your operating system takes those raw readings and computes an estimate of maximum capacity: how much charge the battery can hold today compared to when it was new.

The word doing the work there is estimate. Apple's own battery and performance documentation describes maximum capacity as a measure of battery capacity relative to new, and Apple knows the estimate can go wrong: with iOS 14.5 it shipped a recalibration of the battery health reporting system for iPhone 11 models because the reported maximum capacity and peak performance capability had become inaccurate for some users. Read that again: the meter was wrong enough that Apple rebuilt it. Not the battery, the reporting.

Why the number jumps around

A battery's true capacity declines slowly and smoothly. The estimate of it does not, because the software refines its guess as new data comes in. Common reasons a reading moves:

  • The estimate updated. The system recalculates as it observes charge and discharge behavior. A jump from 89% to 87%, or back up to 88%, is the model correcting itself, not your battery falling off a cliff.
  • An OS update changed the math. Apple's iOS 14.5 recalibration is the documented example: readings changed because the algorithm did.
  • Temperature and usage patterns. The BMS reads differently under heat and heavy load, and estimates built on those readings wobble with them.

A single reading is a snapshot of a moving estimate. The trend over weeks is the real signal.

Why 3uTools and your iPhone disagree

Plug an iPhone into a desktop tool like 3uTools and you will often see a different battery health number than the one in Settings. People read this as the phone hiding the truth. The duller reality: both numbers come from the same BMS data, read and processed differently. iOS applies its own smoothing and update schedule to the raw values; desktop tools pull the registers directly and apply their own math. Neither is a lab measurement.

A gap of a few percentage points between tools is normal and means nothing by itself. A large, persistent gap usually points to stale system data, most often right after a battery replacement, when iOS has not yet refreshed its reading. If the numbers still disagree wildly after a few weeks of normal use, a proper diagnostic at a service provider settles it, not another app.

Android: same story, different screens

Android's meters are estimates too, and the platform's fragmentation means every reading lives somewhere else. The recalibration myth: stop draining to zero

The advice refuses to die: run the phone to 0%, charge to 100%, and the meter resets. It comes from old nickel-based batteries, which had a memory effect and benefited from full cycles. Lithium-ion batteries do not work that way. Battery University's guidance on prolonging lithium-based batteries is blunt about it: lithium-ion has no memory, and deep discharges stress the battery more than partial ones. A full drain does not recalibrate the health estimate. At most it briefly tidies the charge percentage display, and it does so by adding exactly the kind of wear you were trying to avoid.

Notice what Apple did when its meter needed recalibrating: it shipped a software update that observed normal charging over time. No full discharges required. If the company that built the meter does not drain batteries to fix it, neither should you.

So when should you actually worry?

Ignore single readings and app disagreements. Act on patterns:
