That difference, not the materials inside the battery, is the honest answer to whether power bank sharing is actually better for the environment than buying your own: fewer physical units doing far more total work beats many units doing very little.
The scale of the problem it sits inside is bigger than most people expect. The world generated 62 million tonnes of e-waste in 2022, and only 22.3% of it was formally collected and recycled, according to the UN Institute for Training and Research's Global E-waste Monitor 2024. Even Europe, the best-performing region, only recycles 42.8% of what it generates. E-waste is growing about five times faster than the world's ability to recycle it, and the report expects the formal recycling rate to fall to 20% by 2030 even as total volume rises to 82 million tonnes.
Why a personal power bank quietly becomes e-waste
Most personal powerbanks are not thrown away in a clean, deliberate moment. They are set aside. A 2022 survey of 8,775 European households, run by members of the WEEE Forum and consolidated by UNITAR's Sustainable Cycles Programme, found the average household holds 74 electronic products, and 13 of them are hoarded, unused in a drawer or cupboard rather than recycled. Nine of those are still working. Small consumer electronics and accessories, the category a power bank sits in alongside headphones and remote controls, topped the list of what gets hoarded most.
The reasons people gave for holding on to a dead or unused device explain why: 46% said they might use it again, and 7% simply did not know how to dispose of it properly. A power bank fits both excuses well. It still technically works, so tossing it feels wasteful, but there is rarely an obvious bin for it either.
Capacity loss is also just physics. Most personal powerbanks, including the ones sold by brands like Anker, are rated for roughly 300 to 500 full charge cycles before they noticeably weaken. After a couple of years of regular use, a personal unit is holding less charge, not gone, which is exactly the state that lands it in a drawer instead of a recycling bin.
The EU is already writing rules for this gap
The regulatory response confirms how far current battery recycling sits from where it needs to be. The EU's Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 sets a collection rate target for portable batteries of 63% by the end of 2027, rising to 73% by 2030. It also requires new batteries to contain a minimum share of recycled lithium, starting at 6% by 2031 and increasing after that. Targets exist because current performance is below them. A law does not mandate a 63% collection rate for something that is already being collected at 90%.
The real risk of "just throwing it out"
The alternative to hoarding a dead power bank, tossing it in the regular bin, carries its own documented hazard. The US Environmental Protection Agency warns that lithium-ion batteries left in household trash or curbside recycling bins are a known cause of fires at waste and recycling facilities: a loose battery gets jostled against other metal, its terminals short, and it ignites. The EPA's guidance is specific because the failure mode is specific, batteries need a dedicated collection point, not a general bin, and most households do not have one within easy reach.
That combination, a device people are reluctant to bin and unsure how to recycle properly, is exactly how so many end up hoarded rather than processed either way.
The sharing math
A shared powerbank does not avoid this problem by being made differently. It avoids it by living differently. Instead of sitting in one person's bag between occasional trips, a unit on a rental network moves constantly between renters, getting recharged and reused within hours rather than weeks. None of this makes power bank sharing waste-free. A rental network still manufactures batteries, still retires them, and still needs a genuine recycling channel at the end, exactly what the EU Battery Regulation's rising collection and recycled-content targets are pushing every operator toward, Brick included.
